Police charge Khalil Smith with stealing a BMW from a Pembroke Pines dealership and firing shots at his mother's house.
Pembroke Pines police arrested Khalil Smith, 29, after he allegedly posed as a customer to steal a BMW from BMW of Pembroke Pines, then drove to his mother's house, put on a ski mask, and fired shots at her bedroom doors. A judge denied Smith bond on charges including carjacking and premeditated attempted murder. His mother told investigators she had recently kicked him out of her home and that he had anger issues after being discharged from the Navy in 2025.
A 29-year-old man walked into a Pembroke Pines car dealership Monday claiming he wanted to buy a BMW, then allegedly punched the salesman who handed him the keys and drove off with the car. Hours later, police say, he put on a ski mask and camouflage jacket, climbed a fence behind his mother's house, and fired shots through her bedroom doors.
Khalil Smith now faces carjacking and premeditated attempted murder charges, among others, according to Pembroke Pines Police. A judge denied him bond during his first court appearance Tuesday.
According to an arrest report, Smith arrived at BMW of Pembroke Pines and told a salesman he was interested in a specific vehicle. The salesman let him sit inside and handed over the key as a condition of the test drive. Once Smith had the key, he punched the salesman in the abdomen and ordered him to back away. The salesman got out, and Smith drove the car straight out of the showroom, police said.
Not long after, Pembroke Pines officers got a call about shots fired at a house nearby. A woman told dispatchers a masked man had come to her back patio and fired several rounds at the glass doors. Detectives later matched that address to Smith's mother.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed a man in a black ski mask and camouflage jacket approaching the house and jumping a fence into the backyard, police said. The footage shows him walking up to the master bedroom's glass French doors and trying to get inside. When the doors wouldn't budge, he raised what appeared to be a handgun toward the glass. The cameras didn't capture the shooting itself, but the man is seen afterward walking back to the front of the house and getting into the stolen BMW.
Officers found Smith and the BMW nearby a short time later and took him into custody. A search of the car turned up a tan backpack, a black ski mask, and a .22-caliber handgun with an empty magazine, according to the arrest report. At the house, detectives recovered ten spent .22-caliber shell casings that matched the gun found in Smith's car. Investigators determined four shots had been fired toward the bed inside the room.
When detectives interviewed the woman whose house was shot at, she identified herself as Smith's mother. She told police she had recently kicked her son out of her home, saying he had been disrespectful and refused to help around the house. She also told investigators Smith had been discharged from the Navy in 2025 and had struggled with anger issues since.
Pembroke Pines Police laid out a timeline connecting the two scenes: Smith took the BMW by force from the dealership, drove directly to his mother's house, went around back to the area where she would likely be, and opened fire on the bedroom doors once he found them locked.
The dealership theft and the shooting are now part of the same case against Smith, who is being held without bond in Broward County. His next court date had not been announced as of Tuesday afternoon. The salesman who was punched during the carjacking was not seriously hurt, and no injuries were reported at the mother's house.
Pembroke Pines Police have not said whether Smith has an attorney who can speak on his behalf. The .22-caliber handgun recovered from the stolen BMW remains in evidence.
