Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava criticizes Putin invitation to Dec. 14-15 G20 Summit at Trump National Doral

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said President Donald Trump's decision to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 Summit at Trump National Doral on Dec. 14-15, 2026, is troubling. Putin has not attended the annual summit in person since 2019, and his travel has been restricted since Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava criticized President Donald Trump's decision to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 Summit at Trump National Doral on Dec. 14-15, 2026. In a statement posted on X, Levine Cava said Putin's invasion of Ukraine and Russia's actions against civilians make the invitation troubling.

Levine Cava pointed to Miami-Dade's connections to families who fled authoritarian governments. She said Cuban, Venezuelan, Nicaraguan, Haitian and Ukrainian families came to the county after tyrants took their homes, jailed their loved ones and silenced their voices. She also said diplomacy and ending the war matter, but added that Putin should not receive a global stage in a city that has become a refuge from people like him.

Putin has not attended the annual G20 summit in person since 2019. His participation in in-person meetings has been limited since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which restricted his travel abroad.

The summit is scheduled at Trump National Doral, a Miami-Dade resort that will host the international meeting in December 2026.
