ICE detains Carbone Miami employee Volkan Guzey at Miami International Airport before honeymoon

ICE agents detained Volkan Guzey, a longtime employee of Carbone Miami, at Miami International Airport on September 4 as he and his wife were about to board a flight to begin their honeymoon, according to his wife, Eliana Cabrera.
Cabrera said two agents approached Guzey at the boarding gate and asked for his passport and entry visa. Before they took him away, she said, Guzey told her to board the flight so she could visit her cousin's newborn. He called about ten minutes later to say he was being detained, she said, and she did not hear from him again for two days.
The couple had married less than three months earlier. Cabrera said she had planned a road trip through Utah, her home state, to show Guzey where she grew up and introduce him to more of her family.
Cabrera said authorities moved Guzey from Florida to Texas and then to Colorado. ICE's online detainee locator listed him as in custody at the Denver Contract Detention Facility in Colorado as of October 8.
Guzey, originally from Turkey, has worked as a captain at Carbone Miami since January 2021. He arrived with other Major Food Group employees who moved from New York to help open the Miami Beach restaurant.
His restaurant work predates Carbone. Cabrera said his career included jobs at Fig & Olive and Del Posto, followed by a captain's assistant position at The Grill in 2017.
In a GoFundMe titled "Help Bring Volkan Home," Cabrera said the couple met two years ago and married on June 12.
"He made me feel safe in a way I hadn't felt in years," she wrote.
She described the honeymoon as time they were supposed to spend together as newlyweds.
"We were supposed to be taking a road trip through Utah, laughing in the car, taking pictures, eating good food, and making memories forever as newlyweds," she wrote.
Cabrera said Guzey was the household's primary earner. In the fundraiser, she said legal fees have passed $15,000 and she has enough money for about one more month of rent. She said she is trying to keep their remaining savings available for a possible bond.
She said she has applied for several full-time jobs and has not received an offer. If she cannot pay their expenses, she said she may have to leave their Miami apartment and move in with her mother.
ICE has not provided details about the basis for Guzey's detention or whether removal proceedings have begun.
